This series offers reflections from my childhood — the people, events, and "fears" which influenced my being.
These paintings represent reflections of a childhood spent in the Deep South in the 50's and 60's. My work has been greatly influenced by Southern writers and regional artists. I strive to do visually what such writers as Truman Capote and Kaye Gibbons have done with the written word. Included are short texts which may or may not accompany each painting.
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas

Ironing is a hot, boring job. EVERYTHING must be ironed — including daddy's handkerchiefs and underwear! Sometimes it helps to pretend that you are a smart lady on the Mid-day Show and you are teaching people the proper way to iron.
If I was married to Little Joe Cartwright, I would never have to iron again. That cute little man, Hopsing, would be so happy to iron for me.

The constant argument between the two sisters was (1) who was the sickest and (2) who would acquire the dubious honor of being first to die. Rosa won. Mamie never forgave her.

Hog Killin' Day. The coldest day of the year. Nothing is wasted. Quickly up the concrete steps. The screen door to the kitchen is jerked open and slams shut loudly because there is no spring to cushion the blow. Grandmother is standing at the kitchen table putting final touches on a large platter of hog's head cheese.
A shocking sight for a girl of eight. There is no spring to cushion the blow on the coldest day of the year.

Grandmother's house is waaay out in the country and it is painted BRIGHT pink. The garage out back is painted BRIGHT pink, too.
In Grandmother's yard are BRIGHT pink mimosa trees and three BRIGHT pink concrete flamingos (they are fun to ride).

Everywhere she went she carried a
brown paper bag. Like Mary Poppins' satchel,
its contents defied logic. Among the items
packed into this special sack were:
- a pencil and pad
- a tin can of Tube Rose Snuff
- a blue bottle of liquid to loosen her bowels
- a pink bottle of liquid to slow them down
- an entire assortment of pills (prescription and otherwise)
all taken for various ailments and inadequacies —
all NECESSARY for her ability to function and exist as a
NORMAL human.

Take a walk a zillion miles to the back of the farm (where the pond is) far away from the house. Along the fence you will find a large persimmon tree.
Make sure the persimmon you eat is ripe. You will know if it is not (your mouth will turn dry and twist inside-out).

The green peas. The dreaded green peas. They seem to multiply before her as she anticipates their disgusting green taste. (Fingernails taste much better!) The green peas. The dreaded green peas. You MUST NOT get up until they are gone! Bobby and Sissy dance on.

She dreams of the day when Fred will tire of Ginger and waltz into her life. He will sweep her into his arms and take her away. They will sing and dance and sway and have lots of singing and dancing and swaying children. And they will live happily ever after.

If your sister is fixin' to go to the JuniorSenior and she is fussing because her hair is too dry and puffy — don't even tell her to put a little baby oil on it. YOU KNOW that a "little dab'll do her."
But SHE doesn't even think of that and SHE pours lots of baby oil into her hands and rubs it all over her dry, puffy hair which changes to an oily, droopy mess really fast! Even large amounts of baby powder will not soak it up. Don't even try to do your sister any favors.

The night was cold when they saw Johnnie Mae's body all laid out at the funeral home. No one was there. A television was blasting loudly away in an empty room nearby. Johnnie Mae's family had gone home and so had the spirit of Johnnie Mae. Turn off the t.v. set.
Let Johnnie Mae's body rest in silence as her soul dances joyfully somewhere else.

Canasta night. The neighbors take their places with mama and daddy around the dinette set. The boy and girl settle in daddy's recliner armed with celery. Rod Serling appears before the two and prepares them for their journey to ...
The Twilight Zone.

Drawing on daddy's feet is fun. He doesn't mind at all because he is "asleep." You can draw or write anything you want to on daddy's feet. Soap and water will remove it all before he wakes up.
Make sure you use a ballpoint pen is the only rule. Do not use a permanent marker on daddy's feet.

Macaroni and cheese.
Macaroni and cheese.
The boy willl eat nothing more.
Macaroni and cheese.
Macaroni and cheese.
His taste buds seem such a bore.
No wonder he's such a NOODLE.

Night time is the worst time of all — especially if your sister is gone and you have to sleep ALONE!
Even if it is a HOT, summer night — you MUST pull up the covers. Everyone knows that a knife cannot go through a sheet or a bedspread.
Don't move.
Don't make a sound.
Don't even blink your eyes.

Where to hide when the INDIANS come?!
For they will surely come. They are always on television — shooting their arrows into people and then scalping them. The flaming arrows are the worst. The INDIANS will reach South Georgia soon. It is best to be prepared.

The BOMB will hit soon. She knows it will. She must practice getting under her desk at school. Those people on the Twilight Zone had a bomb shelter. Her family does not. She is afraid. She must be prepared. She will dig a hole in the backyard beneath the oak tree (the one she tells secrets to). It will save her. She will take her comic book collection so she will have lots to read. Little Lulu, Audrey, Casper, Superman and the confidant oak tree will save her.

Genetics are a funny thing.
Genetics are not fair!
For example:
Some girls develop early.
Some do not.
Some girls tan easliy.
Some do not.
Some girls get fever blisters.
Some do not.
Some girls get freckles.
Some do not.
Some girls swim good.
Some do not.
Some girls play with their brothers.
SOME DO NOT!
Genetics are not fair at all!
